In a significant move to avert relegation from the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur has appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager. This decision comes after the unsuccessful tenure of Igor Tudor, making De Zerbi the club's third managerial appointment this season.
De Zerbi has reportedly agreed to a five-year contract with the London club, which is currently just a single point above the relegation zone with seven matches left to play. Notably, the agreement does not include any clause that would allow the club to release him if they are relegated, signalling a strong long-term commitment from Spurs and acknowledging the critical state of their current campaign.
Tudor's departure followed a brief and unsuccessful 44-day period where the team failed to achieve a single victory in the Premier League. This poor run has plunged the club into serious jeopardy of their first relegation from the top flight since 1977. The club's leadership acted swiftly, identifying De Zerbi as their preferred candidate to stabilize the team's performance and restore morale.
Arrangements for De Zerbi's travel are reportedly underway, with his debut match in charge anticipated to be an away fixture against Sunderland on Sunday, April 12. He is expected to collaborate with the existing coaching staff, including assistant coach Bruno Saltor, who has remained with the club.
The acquisition of De Zerbi was pursued aggressively by Tottenham, even though the Italian had previously expressed his intention to take a break after leaving Marseille in February. The club's management is confident that his strategic acumen and modern coaching philosophy will provide the immediate boost needed to secure their Premier League status.
