The Super Eagles have faced a significant setback ahead of their international friendlies following the news that defender Calvin Bassey is unable to participate due to a back injury.

The centre-back from Fulham FC, who distinguished himself while representing Nigeria at the last Africa Cup of Nations, will not be available for the upcoming games against Iran and Jordan, scheduled to take place in Antalya, Turkey.

Bassey’s absence is notably a major disappointment for head coach Eric Chelle, particularly given his remarkable continuity and impact on the team's dynamics.

He played a key role during Nigeria's journey in the last AFCON held in Morocco, contributing to their third-place finish and earning recognition in the Team of the Tournament.

Despite this setback, training sessions are ongoing with a near-complete squad, as team captain Wilfred Ndidi has rejoined his teammates, which bolsters the group overall.

Currently, 22 players are present in camp, fully engaged in preparation for their first training session on Wednesday.

The arrivals of noteworthy attacking talents Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams earlier have also added attacking strength to the squad.

Other regulars, including Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Paul Onuachu, and Samuel Chukwueze, are also pivotal members, alongside midfield specialists Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika.

As for defensive line-up options, Coach Chelle still has Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi, Bruno Onyemaechi, and Igoh Ogbu, who are anticipated to fill the void left by Bassey’s absence.

Nigeria will engage Iran on March 27 and subsequently take on Jordan on March 31, with both matches planned to be held in Antalya after a relocation from Amman due to security issues in the Middle East.

With training already in progress for 22 players, the Super Eagles are keen to adapt to the gap left by Bassey as they continue their preparations for these vital friendlies.
