Suspected terrorists carried out a bombing on a bridge situated along Luma Road in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on Monday morning, with the motive of obstructing troop movements linked to ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
Reports indicate that the bombing happened around 2 a.m., affecting a critical bridge connecting the communities of Luma, Babana, and Agwara, areas that have faced a series of attacks recently.
Residents reported that the destruction of the bridge has hindered activities at the Babana border market, which occurs every Monday, leaving many traders unable to reach the market area.
The Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that the bridge was targeted using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) believed to have been positioned by the assailants operating from Kainji National Park.
He elaborated on the situation: “On March 23, 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., it was reported that earlier at approximately 2:00 a.m., terrorists using an IED bombed a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu Local Government Area, which connects the communities of Luma, Babana, and Agwara. This attack appears to be aimed at undermining security efforts in the vicinity. We are continuing to monitor the situation, and we have intensified clearance operations.”
In a separate incident, it was reported that a commercial vehicle with eight passengers struck another IED on the Nuku-Woro road, resulting in the deaths of all individuals aboard.
Authorities suspect that this explosive device was also planted by bandits, though the police spokesperson did not comment on the fatalities regarding the eight travelers involved in that incident.
