The Akwa Ibom State Police Command successfully intervened to save an 81-year- old man from a suspected fraud ring active in Uyo and its surroundings.
Announcing the operation, the police spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, revealed in a statement issued on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, that three individuals were apprehended in connection with the case.
As stated by the PPRO, the group, known locally as “Utotoh,” is notorious for using manipulative and sinister methods to defraud victims of their money and possessions.
John explained that the perpetrators utilized a tricycle to entice and transport their targets.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command wishes to inform the public that on Monday, 3rd February 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers received credible intelligence and managed to dismantle a suspected fraud operation in Uyo and nearby areas,” the statement noted.
“The information, sourced from a vigilant and concerned citizen, revealed the activities of the so-called ‘Utotoh’ fraudsters, who are believed to specialize in misleading unsuspecting individuals.”
“The suspects allegedly used their operational tricycle not just to lure in but to transport victims, from whom they used deceitful and sinister methods to extract money and other valuables.”
“Upon acting quickly on this intelligence, the police officers arrested the following individuals: Otoabasi Ekpeyong, aged 51, Ubong Sylvanus, aged 42, and Sunday Akpan, aged 60.”
“During the operation, a victim identified as Friday, an 81-year-old pensioner, was rescued unharmed from the suspects.”
“Additionally, a tricycle used in their operations, registered under number UFG-886-QA, was seized, which was found to be lacking a Motor Number.”
“The suspects confessed to engaging in fraudulent activities that allowed them to obtain money and property from multiple victims in Uyo and neighboring regions.”
Ongoing investigations aim to identify other victims, gather their statements, and apprehend additional members of this criminal group.
“The Command reassures the public of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging residents to continue providing timely and credible information to the police.”
