President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asserted that ethical leadership and strong institutions are essential for establishing peace, justice, and long-term development. He warned that political division and the spread of misinformation pose significant threats to global stability.

The President's remarks occurred on Friday at the Global Council for Political Renewal (GCPR) Conference held in Cape Town, where he was represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

In his address to the attendees, President Tinubu stressed that ethical conduct in politics is no longer a choice, particularly in a world that is increasingly divided and evolving rapidly.

“We are in an era marked by significant political and ideological separation, where lies outpace the truth,” he remarked. “Our primary challenge is to safeguard free speech while reinstating responsibility, civility, and faith in public dialogue.”

While presenting Nigeria’s stance on governance, institutional reforms, and human rights, he indicated that his government prioritizes transparency, accountability, and the effective performance of institutions under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Public office is a trust,” he stated. “Our reform initiatives aim to modernize institutions, minimize leaks, and ensure that governmental actions enhance the everyday lives of citizens.”

He emphasized that genuine political renewal necessitates a sustained commitment rather than sporadic measures.

“Political renewal is not a one-time occurrence,” the President affirmed. “It is a continued endeavor to develop institutions, safeguard democratic spaces, and provide real benefits to the populace.”

Highlighting local reforms, President Tinubu referred to various socially and economically focused initiatives aimed at benefitting citizens, particularly the youth, while promoting responsible technology use, including digital platforms.

At the global level, he reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to the foundational principles of the GCPR, which foster dialogue, justice, and peace among nations, stressing the importance of international collaboration in light of economic uncertainties and security issues.

“No nation is exempt from these tensions,” he noted, adding that ongoing dialogue and partnerships are vital for maintaining global stability.

The President also expressed Nigeria's readiness to actively participate in initiatives aimed at creating a comprehensive global framework for ethics, justice, peace, and development, drawing from its experience as a diverse democracy dedicated to unity and inclusiveness.

Notable figures attending the conference included Russell Mmiso Dlamini, Prime Minister of Eswatini and President of the GCPR; Furio Honsell, Secretary- General of the GCPR; José Ramos-Horta, President of East Timor; and Simplice Mathew Sarandji, President of the National Assembly of the Central African Republic, among others.
