The traditional leader of Ishinkwor, a community within Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, identified as HRH Jehoshaphat Ikegwu, has been killed. Reports indicate that armed individuals entered his palace on Wednesday night, April 1, and fatally shot the monarch through a window.
Confirming the violent event to journalists, the chairman of the local government, Ikechukwu Ogbofia, stated that the Nigeria Police Force has commenced an investigation into the killing. He also appealed to the residents of the community to maintain peace amidst the tragedy.
This incident raises the total number of traditional rulers who have lost their lives in Ebonyi State to five. In a similar event last month, the traditional ruler of the Ndufu-Alike community, located in Ikwo Local Government Area, was killed following his abduction. His body was reportedly set on fire by his captors.
Authorities had previously arrested approximately nine suspects in connection with that earlier crime, though further details on the progress of that case have not been publicly disclosed.
