A Texas girl, aged 9, tragically passed away after a deadly incident involving the 'blackout challenge' she witnessed on social media platforms. JackLynn Blackwell died from choking in her family's backyard on February 3, 2026, shortly after she had shared a video of the challenge with her grandmother.

Her father, Curtis Blackwell, recounted the day, noting that it had been quieter than usual outside. "She goes out to play like she always does, out in the yard. I noticed it’s kind of quiet – quieter than it should’ve been," he told CBS News while expressing his sorrow.

Upon checking, he found her in a corner near the carport with a cord around her neck, mistaking her initial position for playful behavior. The father rushed over and discovered his daughter's lifeless body.

"I tried to do everything I could to save her. I got her off the cord. I tried to give her CPR until the first responders arrived. It was the most terrifying, shocking thing I’ve ever witnessed," he stated. He expressed his deep anguish, saying, "It was horrific to see my daughter in such a vulnerable condition due to something so senseless."

Following the tragedy, JackLynn’s parents condemned the dangerous social media trend, calling for increased awareness regarding the content children consume online.

Curtis Blackwell emphasized, "It’s not a joke, it’s not a game, it’s life and death." He pointed out that many children participating in these challenges, typically aged 9 to 14, have underdeveloped brains and are easily influenced by what they see online.

He further voiced concern over the surge in similar incidents, asserting, "There are too many of these kids lost for these companies not to be held accountable in my view."

The reckless challenge, known to circulate on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, poses severe risks by restricting oxygen flow to the brain, which may lead to seizures, severe injuries, or fatalities. JackLynn's untimely death occurred just days before a critical trial commenced in California aimed at addressing the responsibility of leading social media companies regarding the safety of young users on their platforms.
