Heart-wrenching images have highlighted the severe suffering experienced by James Self, a 47-year-old artist, inflicted by his girlfriend Polly Murphy, who has since been sentenced for his murder.
Polly ruthlessly subjected James to significant emotional and physical torment, including confiscating his phone and isolating him from family and friends, before ultimately attacking him, which resulted in his death weeks later due to the injuries sustained.
On the day of the fatal assault, Polly unleashed a brutal two-hour attack on James, culminating months of domestic abuse that resulted in his alienation from loved ones.
Photos of James reveal the extensive bruising he suffered days after Polly horrifically injured him, injuries that would eventually lead to his passing.
During the violent incident, which occurred in a hotel, Polly savagely punched, kicked, and stomped on him following a birthday trip where James presented her with a gift. After the attack, she casually left the hotel, abandoning him to his fate.
CCTV captured Polly Murphy departing the Smugglers Cove hotel in Clacton on November 8, 2023, right after the brutal incident involving her partner James.
Court proceedings disclosed that Polly delayed seeking medical assistance for James for 18 hours, misleading paramedics into believing he had merely sustained a broken leg. When help finally arrived, medics discovered James had suffered extensive injuries from a prolonged period of violence. Tragically, he succumbed to his wounds after spending six weeks in hospital, passing away on December 21, 2023.
On January 13, 2026, Polly was found guilty of murder at Chelmsford Crown Court and subsequently received a life sentence with a minimum term of 15 years on February 4, 2026.
Following the sentencing, new revelations emerged, including desperate messages James sent to his mother shortly before his death, expressing a desire to reconcile with Polly. He had told his mother, "I want to fix things and make sure she’s OK."
His devastated mother, Ashe Smith, aged 80, lamented, "James felt shame as a victim of domestic abuse. He was reluctant to ask for help, which is why he ultimately lost his life. I don’t want anyone else to endure this."
Ashe noted that it has become painfully clear that male victims of domestic abuse often struggle to report their experiences. She advocates for awareness of the signs of such abuse among younger generations.
Polly Murphy, who had a prior conviction for assault in 2009, assaulted James fatally in Clacton-on-Sea after what was supposed to be a celebratory birthday trip. During the horrifying two-hour attack, she inflicted severe injuries, leaving James with multiple fractured ribs, serious internal damage, and widespread bruising.
Instead of seeking help, Polly fled the hotel and concocted lies to cover her actions. It wasn't until 18 hours later that she finally reached out for assistance, after which paramedics found James in a heavily blood-stained room.
When questioned by the emergency responders about the altercation, James disclosed to them, "No, she’s been hitting me — it was one-sided; I didn’t retaliate."
Ashe described Polly as someone completely lacking empathy, recounting how she callously abandoned James in a beaten state while she went off to buy alcohol and communicate with an ex-lover. "It’s a sign of her psychopathy to leave someone so severely injured like that. You wouldn’t treat a stranger that way, let alone someone you claim to love."
Polly opted to remain silent during police questioning, but detectives uncovered a multitude of text messages evidencing the emotional abuse she inflicted on James, painting a stark picture of a caring partner caught in a toxic relationship.
In a chilling exchange just a month before James’s demise, Polly threatened James, stating, "I will hunt you and kill you. If I ever see you again, I will kill you."
Ashe shared that the harrowing messages were profoundly hurtful and indicative of the psychological manipulation James faced. Despite the abuse, James continued to express love for Polly until his last moments, even imploring police not to take action against her, calling her his "ex-girlfriend" while hospitalized.
Just six weeks post-attack, James, whose artwork gained international recognition, was initially discharged from the hospital but quickly fell ill. He was rushed back into an emergency unit where he fell into a coma and eventually died.
Ashe expressed her heartbreak, stating, "Losing James has devastated me. He was a gift in our lives, bringing joy and kindness with his creative spirit. I am grateful for the time we had with him."
James met Polly at 16 but rekindled their relationship in April 2023. Initially, Ashe was pleased with their relationship, noting their shared interests. However, she soon became aware of Polly’s controlling traits that suffocated James’s personality.
"James was always reserved, but during their visit, she dominated the conversation completely. We sensed something was off, but hoped their happiness would prevail," Ashe explained.
As the abusive relationship progressed, James regularly contacted his mother, but friends began to notice his withdrawal. Ashe recounted how he transformed from a cheerful, sociable individual to a more introverted and somber version of himself, alongside red flags of Polly's erratic behavior.
James ultimately confided in his mother about Polly’s violent outbursts, yet remained blinded by affection for her. He mentioned her jealousy and how unpredictable she could be, stating that she was worth his efforts.
In the weeks before his passing, James informed Ashe that Polly had taken control of his phone, and their interactions revealed escalating aggression. After a particularly troubling incident, Ashe commented on how Polly exacerbated James’s struggles, highlighting the emotional toll the relationship had taken.
Despite this turmoil, Ashe revealed a lack of hate for Polly, showing a desire for preventive education regarding signs of domestic abuse among youth, stating, "Polly may have ruined our lives, but she has ruined hers as well. There’s no sense in seeking revenge; recognition of James’s suffering is what matters most to us."
