The Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has successfully thwarted an attempt to bring prohibited drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre located in Olokuta, Akure, the capital of Ondo State.
This incident took place during a routine security check at the facility's gate, where correctional officials apprehended two visitors and found approximately four grams of suspected Indian hemp hidden within fresh tomatoes that they were attempting to bring inside.
According to a statement from the NCoS released on Wednesday, January 14, 2025, the drugs were securely wrapped in waterproof nylon and were reportedly meant for an inmate currently incarcerated in the facility.
The suspects were promptly arrested following instructions from the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, who stressed the importance of stringent security practices to protect all correctional facilities across the nation.
The service indicated that the arrested individuals have been transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further inquiry and potential legal action.
Applauding the officers involved in the interception, the Corrections Controller in Ondo State, Charles Oyewole, commended their alertness, professionalism, and swift response, noting that the action reflects the agency’s renewed commitment to maintaining security.
He reiterated the Nigerian Correctional Service’s dedication to ensuring secure and humane correctional facilities while striving to eliminate any type of drug trafficking within the correctional system.
The command also issued a warning to the public, especially visitors to correctional centres, that the NCoS will not permit any actions that could undermine the safety and security of its facilities, whether from inside or beyond the custodial walls.
