A Kano State High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging for the murder of a groom in a late-night robbery incident.
The convicted individuals, Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya, who reside in the Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters and Unguwar Malam Quarters of Kumbotso Local Government Area, were found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide in relation to the death of Yazid Haruna.
Delivering the verdict, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu noted that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt, labeling the robbery as a particularly brutal act that raised serious concerns.
Justice Adamu-Aliyu expressed alarm at the increasing number of violent robberies tied to mobile phone theft in various areas within the state.
According to the prosecution, led by Barrister Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the crime took place in the early hours of June 11, 2025, around 2:47 AM in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters.
The court was informed that the defendants had conspired and armed themselves with long knives and a machete before they attacked the victim.
During the assault, they allegedly stole two mobile phones and 19,500 Naira from Haruna, who was stabbed multiple times and eventually succumbed to his injuries.
To support their case, the prosecution called three witnesses and presented medical reports.
The accused denied the charges, and their counsel, Barrister Haruna Saleh- Zakariyya, requested that they testify in their own defense, appealing for leniency from the court.
In her ruling, Justice Adamu-Aliyu convicted the defendants under Sections 97(1), 298(c), and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State. Each of the convicts received a one-year sentence for conspiracy, life imprisonment for armed robbery, and the death penalty for culpable homicide.
It is worth noting that both men had previously been sentenced to death by a different Kano State High Court on October 20, 2025, for the murder of a lecturer during a separate robbery targeting mobile phones.
