Two young boys have tragically died in Kano after accidentally plunging into an open pond while attempting to escape from suspected thieves who had attempted to steal their phones.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed that this unfortunate event took place on March 6, 2026, along Ring Road Kureken Sani, located in the Kumbotso Local Government Area.
Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Fire Service, reported that the victims, identified as 18-year-old Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, were retrieved from the water unconscious and were later pronounced dead.
According to Abdullahi, the victims’ bodies were returned to their father, Ibrahim Shehu, residing in Unguwa Uku Quarters.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the two teenagers were running away from the presumed phone snatchers when they inadvertently fell into the pond.
In a related incident on March 9, 2026, the Fire Service successfully rescued a 40-year-old man, Shitu Balarabe, who had fallen into a well in Durumin Zungura, a district within the Kano Municipal area. He was later handed over to his brother, Jamilu Balarabe.
Alhaji Sani Anas, the Director of the Fire Service, expressed his condolences to the families affected by this tragic loss and urged members of the community to take preventive measures.
He recommended that communities build protective barriers around open water bodies and cover wells to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
