Bandits have launched a violent assault on the communities of Lanta, Tunga, and Bagna, located within Erena Ward in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State. The attacks have led to the deaths of three people and caused injuries to numerous others.
The violence reportedly commenced around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday in Bagna, the ancestral home of former Niger State Commissioner for Internal Security, Emmanuel Umar. The assailants then extended their rampage to neighbouring villages.
A resident of Bagna shared with our correspondent that while the casualty figures are feared to be high, an exact count remains unconfirmed amid the ongoing volatile situation.
Sources indicate that the perpetrators, arriving in significant numbers on motorcycles, maintained their offensive operations for several hours without significant opposition.
"We have recovered three bodies so far. Many individuals sustained injuries of varying severity. A large number of people have evacuated to Erena town, which is the only nearby settlement considered relatively secure. We implore the government to provide immediate assistance," the source stated.
Barrister Maurice Bello Magaji, the Niger State Commissioner for Homeland Security, acknowledged the incident in a statement sent via text message to our correspondent.
"Yes, the state government has received confirmed intelligence and is collaborating with security agencies to address the situation," he confirmed.
