In an alarming event, some individuals allegedly attempted to set fire to a building belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that is currently under renovation. This incident took place on February 19, just two days before the FCT Councils’ elections slated for February 21.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., the Abaji division of the police received reports about the fire attempt. Responding swiftly, a police patrol team arrived at the scene and successfully extinguished the flames.

The police have indicated that foul play may have been involved, based on their preliminary assessment of the situation, noting that the building was not occupied as it is still under renovation. They further disclosed that the contractor had not yet met the project completion deadline, which adds to the suspicion surrounding the event.

The police emphasized that despite the incident, the main INEC office remains secure and is not affected. In light of the situation, law enforcement has deployed armed personnel to the area, ensuring public safety and order while closely monitoring the situation.
