The United States Basketball League (USBL), which has recently been reestablished, has come out in support of its decision to sign Jontay Porter, a former NBA player who was banned for life. The league highlighted its belief in offering "second chances" as Porter attempts to restart his basketball career.

Porter, who was banned by the National Basketball Association in 2024 for his involvement in a gambling scandal, officially signed with the Seattle SuperHawks last week in anticipation of the upcoming season. Despite the associated controversy surrounding the 25-year-old athlete, officials from the league maintain their stance on his signing.

In a statement issued to TMZ Sports, league representatives affirmed that the USBL has "always stood for opportunity" and is committed to supporting players who seek to learn from their pasts and work towards improving their futures.

Jontay Porter, the banned NBA player now signed by USBL, during a basketball event.

Currently, Porter is set to be sentenced following a guilty plea in July 2024 to one charge of conspiracy related to wire fraud as part of a federal gambling investigation. Although he could face up to 20 years in prison, it is anticipated that his sentence will be between three and four years.

After conducting detailed discussions with Porter, the SuperHawks organization expressed confidence in the player’s "sincerity, accountability, and determination to move in a positive direction," a sentiment echoed by the USBL.

The league stated that Porter fully recognizes the repercussions of his actions and has demonstrated "genuine remorse" coupled with a commitment to self-improvement.

Both USBL and SuperHawks officials are aligned in providing Porter the opportunity to resume his basketball career, framing this decision as a pathway for redemption through accountability and hard work.

Should Porter participate in the SuperHawks’ season opener on Saturday, March 7, it will be his first chance to play professionally since the NBA’s lifetime ban was enacted. While uncertainty looms regarding his legal matters, the USBL seems prepared to support his return to the game.
