Virgil van Dijk emerged as the hero for Liverpool, scoring in the tenth minute of added time to clinch a 2-1 win over rivals Everton in the English Premier League Merseyside derby. This crucial victory at Everton's new Hill Dickinson Stadium significantly strengthens Liverpool's pursuit of a Champions League spot and simultaneously hinders Everton's chances of securing European qualification.
Beto had earlier cancelled out Mohamed Salah's opening goal before van Dijk's late intervention shattered the hopes of the more than 50,000 Everton supporters present. Salah, in what is understood to be his final derby match for Liverpool, found the net in the 29th minute. He coolly finished a pass from Cody Gakpo, thereby matching Steven Gerrard's record for the most Merseyside derby goals scored in the Premier League era.
Everton managed to draw level when Beto, facing pressure from Liverpool's Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate, succeeded in bundling home a cross from Kevin Dewsbury-Hall. This brought the score to 1-1.
The match extended beyond regulation time with eleven minutes of stoppage added, partly due to an injury sustained by Liverpool's goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili following a collision, which ultimately led to his substitution. It was in this extended period that Liverpool secured the bragging rights. Van Dijk rose highest to meet Alexis MacAllister's corner kick, heading the ball into the net for his fourth league goal of the season and sixth across all competitions.
This result means Liverpool have now gone four Premier League Merseyside derbies without a loss, winning the last three encounters. They have also completed the double over Everton for the first time since the 2021/22 season. Under Arne Slot, Liverpool maintains fifth position in the league standings with 55 points from 33 games, holding a seven-point advantage over sixth- placed Chelsea in the race for a top-five finish. Everton currently sits in 10th place, just one point shy of sixth.
