Victor Ikpeba, the esteemed Nigerian footballer, has recognized the late Christian Chukwu as the finest player to ever represent the Super Eagles.
Chukwu, who died in April 2025, was instrumental in leading Nigeria, then known as the Green Eagles, to its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980, securing his place in the history of Nigerian football.
At the club level, he guided Enugu Rangers to claim the now-defunct African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977, overcoming Cameroonian team Canon Yaoundé.
Following his playing career, Chukwu transitioned to coaching and was part of the team that enabled Nigeria's Golden Eaglets to triumph in the first-ever FIFA U-16 World Cup, held in China in 1985.
He also served as an assistant coach under Clemens Westerhof during Nigeria’s victorious campaign in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and the subsequent 1994 FIFA World Cup.
Later, Chukwu took on the managerial role for the Super Eagles, where he led the team to a bronze medal at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
During an appearance on SuperSport’s Monday Night Football, Ikpeba expressed his admiration for Chukwu’s significant influence on Nigerian football.
“Christian Chukwu. He was the first star to win the Africa Cup of Nations. An iconic player—I watched him play in my youth. There were many exceptional players during that period, such as Muda Lawal,” Ikpeba remarked.
“I have witnessed numerous talented players in my time—the 1994 squad, the Olympic champions, and the squad that won AFCON in 2013. More recent talents like Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen have also made an impact. Many remarkable players have worn this jersey,” he added.
