He recounts a specific evening around the age of 12 when the landlord disconnected their apartment's electricity due to unpaid rent. Huddled in the darkness with his six siblings, with no entertainment, he sought solace outside. Sitting by what he describes as a literal gutter, he broke down, questioning his circumstances and asking for divine guidance.
The Backpack and the “Lucky Green” Kit
One of the most poignant sections of the essay details Osimhen's intense anxiety about leaving his familiar surroundings for the first time. His fear of the unknown nearly led him to abandon the opportunity, until a brief but firm word from his father convinced him to proceed.
The morning of his departure, Osimhen confesses to being overwhelmed with nervousness, having never ventured far from his hometown. When the agent facilitating his travel called, he expressed his reluctance to go, stating he was content where he was. His father overheard this and simply told him, "You need to go." Osimhen shares a critical moment during the trials for the national Under-17 team where his aspirations were nearly dashed. With hundreds of aspiring players competing for limited spots, he had a mere 15 minutes to make an impression.
He describes the overwhelming scene with nearly 900 boys vying for selection. On the second day, a coach finally noticed him and gave him a chance, stating, "Green shirt. Let's go. You have 15 minutes." Driven by the immense pressure, he committed to running relentlessly, aiming to impress through sheer effort. Within those 15 minutes, he managed to score two goals.
Despite his performance, his name was not initially called when the list was announced, leading him to believe his dream was over. As players began to leave, he heard shouts calling for the "guy in green." He returned to the coaches, and after confirming he was the player who scored twice, a team doctor held up two fingers, signalling their approval. This gesture, he states, was what ultimately secured his place on the team.
Finding a Father Figure in Spalletti
Following a difficult experience involving transfer politics at Lille, which tragically coincided with his father's final days, Osimhen felt lost and contemplated quitting football. His path changed significantly upon his arrival in Naples and his encounter with coach Luciano Spalletti.
He explains that joining Napoli helped him find himself again, expressing gratitude to the city, fans, and teammates for their role in his recovery. He recalls telling Spalletti upon arrival about his emotional turmoil and anger.
