A local vigilante group in Bargaja village, within Sokoto State's Isa Local Government Area, reportedly killed three suspected bandits during a confrontation early on Sunday morning.
According to reports, the bandits infiltrated the village around 1:30 a.m. via an outskirt route, planning to attack the community.
A community leader, who requested anonymity, recounted that the assailants initially concealed themselves atop trees close to the village graveyard. Meanwhile, some of them infiltrated a house on the village's outskirts, where they confronted the vigilant members responsible for protecting the area.
The informant indicated that one member of the vigilante group lost his life at the onset of the skirmish, after which others returned fire, resulting in the deaths of three of the bandits during the clash.
Moreover, it was reported that the assailants continued their pursuit of another vigilante member who had sought refuge in a house and subsequently killed him.
“Two of our vigilante members were killed. In defense, we managed to eliminate three of the attackers during the exchange,” he stated.
The fallen vigilantes were identified as Umar Ibrahim and Abubakar Abdullahi.
Residents noted that the assailants took advantage of a donkey to transport the bodies of their deceased companions, seemingly to shield their identities.
It was revealed that they had abandoned their motorcycles some distance from the village to minimize noise, which could have alerted the locals to their presence.
“They approached the village on foot, knowing we had set up defenses. They parked their bikes far off to avoid being detected. Following the gunfight, they utilized a donkey to remove the bodies of those killed as they fled after damaging a fence,” another villager explained.
The event instilled fear among the locals, leading some to consider fleeing the village. However, intervention from community leaders, including the village head and the commander of the local guards, helped to calm the situation and encouraged residents to stay put.
The villagers expressed frustrations over the recurring attacks, highlighting that Bargaja lacks a consistent security presence, despite facing similar threats as neighboring areas.
Calls were made to both state and federal authorities to enhance security measures in the village to combat the enduring menace of banditry.
“Inevitably, we require an urgent security framework here as the frequent bandit attacks are becoming unmanageable. In fact, even at the start of Ramadan, some of our people lost their lives,” emphasized a resident.
In response to inquiries, the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, confirmed their awareness of the incident and the reported casualties during the exchange.
