A group of thugs, estimated to be in the hundreds, launched attacks on several communities in Kano, destroying local bakeries and a ward head’s residence, which resulted in injuries to residents and extensive property damage.

The mob reportedly targeted at least seven locations within the Dala Local Government Area during late hours on Tuesday, with the violence persisting into the early hours of Wednesday. While there were no fatalities, numerous individuals suffered from various injuries.

The impacted neighborhoods include Dala, Rijiya Biyu, Aikawa, Dukurawa, Shatsari, Kabawa, and Kangiwa quarters, all situated in the Kano metropolis.

Authorities, along with local vigilante groups, finally intervened to disperse the attackers, who fled to evade arrest.

An operator from one of the affected bakeries, Muhammad Adam, recounted to journalists that his bakery on Bala DPO Street in Dala faced an attack from individuals equipped with local weapons.

The district head of the area, Wakilin Arewa, Alhaji Farouk Muhammad, confirmed the alarming incident and attributed the attacks to increasing drug abuse among the youth.

“This unfortunate occurrence commenced from Rijiya Biyu quarters and spread to other areas, reaching Dukurawa, where several gurasa bakeries were engulfed in flames,” he stated.

He further noted that the assailants vandalized a resident’s vehicle and caused partial damage to the house belonging to the ward head of Rijiya Biyu.

“I invoke God’s protection amid these troubling developments, especially with the escalating issues of drug abuse and youth thuggery,” he expressed.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed that they responded to emergency calls around 11:30 PM on Tuesday. Their team was able to contain the fire, which involved bundles of sticks typically used in baking operations.
