A total of 75 women golfers from various parts of Nigeria will compete in the inaugural Oluremi Tinubu golf classic, which is slated to take place on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Canaanland Golf and Country Club located in Koko, Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The one-day event, named in honor of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, was introduced by Felix Aganbi, the Chief Executive Officer of Akogate Group. According to Aganbi, the tournament is aimed at enhancing women's golf in Nigeria by providing avenues for up-and-coming players and fostering sports development within the Niger Delta region.

In his statement, Aganbi expressed, “The Oluremi Tinubu Golf Classic will draw international talents, offer opportunities for emerging athletes, and inspire younger generations to explore the possibilities within women's golf.”

The event is being organized with guidance from Sir Alfred and Mrs. Warami Temile, who emphasized its strategic design to boost women's engagement in golf and attract players, officials, and spectators to Warri North. They also highlighted the anticipated impact of the tournament in enhancing tourism and hospitality sectors in Delta State.

“Beyond being a single-day event, it enables women to compete for prize money,” Aganbi remarked, underscoring that the initiative also emphasizes empowerment and long-term progress.

He appealed to men nationwide to actively support female involvement in sports, encouraging husbands, fathers, and brothers to motivate their wives, daughters, and sisters. “It’s vital for men to understand that an uneducated or uninformed woman is a liability, not just for her family but for the nation as a whole,” he added.

In parallel with this effort towards grassroots development, the organizers are launching the Canaanland Golf Training and Tournament for young girls. This program is scheduled for Sunday, March 8, 2026, at the same venue and will coincide with the observance of International Women’s Day.

Aganbi indicated that the training is open to girls aged 8 to 16, aiming to introduce them to the sport in a nurturing environment. “This golf training and tournament will not only familiarize girls with golf in a fun setting but will also help them develop confidence, acquire essential skills, and foster friendships within a supportive community,” he explained.

He further elaborated that participants will receive coaching on golf fundamentals, covering aspects like grip, stance, posture, alignment, rules, and etiquette, in addition to hands-on training in chipping, putting, driving, and an 18-hole play experience.

“The training and tournament will facilitate broader opportunities for girls in Nigeria to realize their potential via education,” Aganbi remarked, affirming that this initiative aligns with wider objectives to encourage women’s participation in sports, leadership, and community advancement.
