Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has disclosed that significant progress has been made in discussions with a private company for the development of a 250-room, five-star hotel in Umuahia. This initiative is designed to stimulate tourism and commercial activities within the state capital.
The announcement was made by Governor Otti on Friday during a civic reception held in his honour by the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
According to the governor, the designated location for the new hotel has been identified, and a partnership agreement is anticipated to be finalized by the upcoming weekend, paving the way for a groundbreaking ceremony.
"I have received the draft agreement, which I will sign this weekend to bring in a partner and finalize the deal for a five-star hotel, similar to the Radisson Blu project we are undertaking in Aba," Otti stated.
He further indicated that the identity of the partner would be revealed during the official groundbreaking event.
Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration's dedication to upholding good governance and fostering sustainable development, emphasizing that leadership is fundamentally about stewardship and serving the populace.
He described governance as a solemn duty, highlighting that his government's actions are guided by public trust and divine inspiration.
"It is an honour to serve our people, and I view leadership fundamentally as service and stewardship. When stewardship is removed from leadership, it becomes self-serving. For us, this is all about stewardship," he explained.
The governor outlined key projects currently in progress in Umuahia, including the planned five-star hotel, the ongoing renovation of the Umuahia Township Stadium, and the upgrade of Amachara Specialist Hospital.
He assured the public that his administration only commits to projects that it is confident in completing.
"The transformation of Umuahia is in its initial phase; it is just beginning. We have a clear vision for Umuahia's future. We are not seeking to emulate other cities; our goal is to make Umuahia the best version of itself. There is still substantial work to be done, and I guarantee that by the time we are finished, Umuahia will be irrevocably changed," Otti added.
During the event, the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Austine Mmeregini, commended the governor for his developmental achievements and effective leadership style, noting that the current administration has rekindled hope in the government's capacity to improve citizens' lives.
The Chairman of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Chinedum Enwereuzo, remarked that the constituency has witnessed unprecedented development under Governor Otti. Speaking on behalf of the chairmen of Ikwuano and Umuahia North LGAs, he pledged the constituents' unwavering support.
Enwereuzo expressed confidence that the people would demonstrate their appreciation for the governor's performance through their votes in the 2027 elections.
Several prominent figures, including former PDP state Chairman Uzodinma Okpara, legal practitioner Monday Ubani (SAN), and former Minister of Defence Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, praised the Otti administration for its significant contributions to Abia's development and transformation. They highlighted initiatives such as social security support for the elderly and improvements in healthcare delivery through the renovation of health facilities.
Archbishop Chibuzo Opoko of the Methodist Church Nigeria, who chaired the occasion, lauded the governor's "transformative leadership" for its substantial impact across various economic sectors. He urged the governor to continue prioritizing projects that would further enhance the state capital, mentioning the Abia International Sports Centre.
Notable moments of the ceremony included the official welcome of former federal lawmaker Oluchi Ibeji and numerous defectors from other political parties to the Labour Party (LP). The National Secretary of LP, Darlington Nwokocha, assured the new members of equal opportunities and fair treatment.
Mr. Ibeji stated that Governor Otti's purposeful leadership has restored hope to the people of Ikwuano and Umuahia and pledged to rally support for the governor's re-election in 2027.
