The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued a statement addressing criticism over perceived oversights in the "In Memoriam" segment during the latest Academy Awards ceremony.

A representative familiar with the selection process, speaking to TMZ, revealed that the Academy receives hundreds of nominations annually from grieving families, friends, and industry peers advocating for the inclusion of their deceased loved ones.

This individual further elaborated that an executive committee, comprising members from various Academy branches, meticulously reviews these submissions. Their recommendations are then guided by the very limited time available for the tribute during the live telecast.

It was also clarified that individuals not featured in the televised portion of the tribute are nonetheless listed on the Academy's official website, where their names remain accessible throughout the year. This explanation comes in the wake of significant social media backlash concerning the absence of several actors, including Eric Dane and James Van Der Beek, from the memorial presentation.

Numerous viewers expressed confusion and disappointment over such omissions, which have reportedly occurred in previous years as well. Although Dane and Van Der Beek were primarily recognized for their television work, their filmographies also included movie roles, leading some critics to argue they merited inclusion in the tribute.

Their recent passing had already garnered considerable attention within Hollywood circles and sparked broader conversations about the financial challenges faced by many actors, particularly how rapidly mounting medical bills can quickly deplete an actor's earnings.

This controversy echoes similar sentiments from the previous year, when the omission of actor Tony Todd from the Oscars memorial segment also drew sharp criticism and outrage from fans.
