Senate President Godswill Akpabio has ridiculed opposition parties, suggesting that they will continue to be disoriented until after the All Progressives Congress (APC) secures victory in the 2027 general elections.
During a reception held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to honour First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Akpabio declared that the APC has already begun its campaign efforts against the 'confused' opposition factions.
The First Lady attended the event to inaugurate the Senior Citizens’ Centre that bears her name, dedicated to Pastor Patience Eno, the deceased wife of the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno.
The occasion coincided with the celebration of this year’s World Women’s Day and drew a remarkable turnout, featuring the wives of governors from various states including Lagos, Imo, Cross River, Delta, Ekiti, Jigawa, Kano, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, and Ondo.
Addressing the lively audience at the International Stadium, Akpabio remarked, “Every time we enact a law and the opposition reacts negatively, it confirms that we've made the right decision.
“While we travel across Nigeria for consultations and campaigning, many in the opposition are still struggling to establish their political parties.
“They haven't completed their registrations and will remain in disarray until after the 2027 elections. Instead of uniting, they are fracturing.
"Consider a man who initially founded the Labour Party, which garnered millions of votes; currently, they are unable to collect even 100 votes because the Labour Party is in turmoil.
“The party now has divided leadership – with some factions in the North, South, West, and East.
“Similarly, the PDP, which was once a unified entity, now fights to maintain five different offices in Abuja while struggling with multiple secretaries. Who will sign their documents?
“Recently, I watched an individual on television lament about the amended Electoral Act, declaring they might boycott the elections.
“My response was straightforward: ‘You are contemplating a boycott because you are unprepared. If you were ready, you would not consider a boycott.’
Akpabio further stated, “One significant takeaway from this visit for the First Lady is the unity that exists in Akwa Ibom.
“It reflects the affection the state has for her husband and the esteem the women of Akwa Ibom hold for her. I joined the governor, Eno, in supporting the President's second-term bid.
“The proposed bill aimed at ensuring greater representation of women in the National Assembly is still in progress. I am hopeful the 10th Assembly will successfully advance this legislation to increase women's presence in Parliament,” Akpabio expressed.
He assured the First Lady that the large reception she received indicated the people of Akwa Ibom's endorsement of her husband for a second term.
He added, “On a day when Akwa Ibom women gathered as early as 8 a.m. to meet her, the thousands still present show our affection for the President and his wife.
“This illustrates our readiness to reelect the President for a second term. On this World Women’s Day, Akwa Ibom women have resolutely decided to endorse President Tinubu for another term.”
Akpabio, referring to Eno as ‘Mr. Unifier,’ noted that Akwa Ibom has never experienced the level of unity currently enjoyed under the current governor, indicating that support for Eno's second term existed prior to his defection from the PDP to the APC.
“I am thankful to President Tinubu in advance for constructing a formidable APC party and maintaining its strength, now with 31 governors and continually progressing. In politics, if numbers matter, who can outmatch such a leader?” he queried.
In response to the populace's warm reception, Mrs. Tinubu expressed, “This love is unforgettable. It is indeed a large rally.
“Thank you for endorsing Mr. President, the Senate President, and the governor for a second term. On behalf of the President, we truly appreciate it.”
