Ondo State’s security outfit, known as the Amotekun Corps, has successfully intercepted a trailer truck containing 61 individuals suspected of being criminals, as it entered the state capital, Akure. The suspects were reportedly hidden within the trailer, which was laden with bags of beans, and was making its way towards Akure North Local Government Area, a region recently plagued by an increase in kidnappings and violent crimes.
During a recent parade of apprehended individuals, the Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, announced that a total of 95 suspected criminals are currently in their custody. He clarified that while only 34 suspects were presented to the press, the 61 individuals found in the trailer were still undergoing profiling and investigation.
“Of the 95 suspects currently detained, 12 were arrested for alleged involvement in kidnapping, with specific operations in Ilu-Abo Akure, Ayede- Akure, Iloro Camp, and Ogbese. Additionally, three suspects were taken into custody for violating the state’s anti-grazing law, and 19 others were apprehended for disturbances of public order,” Adeleye stated.
He further explained that these arrests were the result of intensive, coordinated security operations conducted over several weeks, involving collaboration between the Amotekun Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Army.
In response to rising kidnapping concerns along the Ilu-Abo route, Adeleye confirmed that Amotekun Rangers have established two fixed security posts within the forest areas and deployed personnel along the main roads connecting the affected communities.
He highlighted that the corps is actively working in partnership with local community monitors and vigilante groups, a collaboration that has already led to the foiling of five attempted kidnappings in the region.
Adeleye reiterated the agency’s dedication to ongoing cooperation and intelligence-driven actions, assuring that Amotekun will continue its efforts with all security partners to suppress criminal activities throughout Ondo State.
“Our primary mission is to safeguard lives and properties, and we will maintain our collaboration with all security stakeholders to prevent crime before it escalates,” he added.
