Anambra Legislators Demand Staff Audit for MDAs and LGAs

Lawmakers in Anambra State have urged the government to instruct the Head of Service to carry out a personnel audit across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) as well as Local Government Areas (LGAs). The motion emphasizes the importance of effective workforce management.

Members of the Anambra State House of Assembly have requested that the state government direct the Head of Service, Theodora Igwegbe, to initiate a personnel audit across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) within the state.

The motion was presented by Mimi Azikiwe, who represents the Onitsha 1 State Constituency, during a plenary session held on Thursday in Akwa.

Additionally, she proposed that Vincent Ezeaka, the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, carry out a similar audit covering all local council areas.

Azikiwe defined the personnel audit as a thorough evaluation of an organization’s human resources policies and practices.

"The purpose is to measure efficiency and ensure adherence to relevant laws and regulations," she stated.

The lawmaker further noted that the objective includes pinpointing the strengths and weaknesses within an organization and aligning workforce capabilities with the overall goals.

“It also aims to foster a productive work environment, address organizational challenges, and assess skills among other aspects," Azikiwe added.

She explained that a staff audit reinforces management performance by revealing policy shortcomings and procedural errors.

“This audit enhances human resources efficiency by bolstering employee relations and refining communication channels along with conflict resolution processes.

“The audit also offers vital insights for workforce planning, training requirements, and serves as a means for optimizing the workforce,” she expressed.

Azikiwe emphasized that effective documentation and evaluation of employee records ensure accuracy and assist in deciding when to bolster the workforce with new hires.

She revealed that the last comprehensive audit in the state took place in 2018.

Ebuka Igwe, representing Idemili South State Constituency, supported the motion, reinforcing that the audit is necessary to enhance state workforce dynamics and accommodate the replacement of retired or deceased personnel.

Noble Igwe from Ogbura 1 State Constituency lauded the motion as "timely and commendable," highlighting its potential to identify committed employees and mitigate inefficiencies in government operations.

He noted that such audits illustrate staff capabilities, spotlight systemic weaknesses, and pave the way for improved working conditions and productivity.

Speaker Sometochukwu Udeze praised the lawmakers for their initiative, noting its implications for development and economic progress in the state. He urged immediate government action, labeling the matter a public priority.

In a related note, the House welcomed a group of over 20 corps members serving in the Awka South Local Government Area, who attended the session to observe the proceedings. Udeze encouraged them to focus on the discussions, emphasizing their role as future leaders and lawmakers.

Praise Urliefe, the team leader, expressed her appreciation for observing the Assembly's activities, describing the experience as inspirational and significant for their development as future leaders.
