The Ghana Football Association confirmed on Monday that Carlos Queiroz will take the helm as the head coach of the nation's men's senior football team. This appointment follows the dismissal of the previous coach, Otto Addo.
According to a statement released by the FA, Queiroz was selected by the association's executive council, in collaboration with other key stakeholders. His mandate is to lead the Black Stars in their bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
"The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, working with all key stakeholders, has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars," the FA stated.
"The former Real Madrid, Manchester United, Portugal, and Iran coach will lead Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States."
The Ghanaian football authorities also indicated that Queiroz is set to begin his duties immediately, focusing on preparations for the upcoming World Cup tournament.
Queiroz, 73, who previously led Portugal to the knockout stages of the World Cup in 2010, expressed his ambition to leverage the country's footballing talent to bring joy to the nation.
"Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul. I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future. Together, with unity, discipline, and ambition, we will work to honour the expectations of a great football nation," Queiroz remarked.
He added, "This is not just another job — it is a mission. And I am ready to give everything of my experience and knowledge once again, in service of the game and the happiness of People."
Ghana's opening match in the tournament is scheduled against Panama in Toronto, Canada, on June 17. They will subsequently face England and Croatia in their remaining group stage fixtures.
