FIFA has officially denied a request submitted by the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran seeking to move its 2026 World Cup group stage fixtures away from the United States to Mexico.

The governing body's stance was confirmed by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who stated that significant logistical obstacles were the primary reasons for adhering to the original tournament arrangement.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has repeatedly asserted that no alternative venue plans are in place and that all matches will proceed as initially scheduled following the draw.

The Iranian federation's request stemmed from escalating geopolitical tensions and concerns regarding the safety of their players, particularly following a series of public exchanges between Tehran and Washington. Earlier, former US President Donald Trump had suggested on social media that Iran's participation could pose a safety risk. In response, Iran's Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali indicated that the country's participation remained contingent on the relocation of its matches.

Although Mexico expressed initial willingness to co-host the tournament, FIFA ultimately concluded that altering the venues would introduce unacceptable operational complexities.

Iran is currently drawn in Group G. Their schedule includes matches against New Zealand and Belgium, both slated to be played in Los Angeles, followed by their final group game against Egypt in Seattle. These fixtures are set to take place between June 15 and June 27.

While diplomatic rhetoric between the two nations continues, FIFA remains steadfast in its commitment to the established schedule. The tournament is set to take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The global football authority has emphasized its dedication to proceeding with the event as planned, irrespective of external political dynamics.
