Today, we take a moment to reflect thoroughly on an important milestone in the life of Professor Lateef Babatunde Ayeleru as he reaches 60. All friends, associates, and supporters are encouraged to wear their finest attire and head to Trenchard Hall at the University of Ibadan to join the celebration.
This gathering is not just a memorable event but a recognition of Professor Ayeleru's six decades of dedicated service, excellence, and inspiration, particularly in the field of academia.
Reaching 60 years is significant, especially when considering the UN's 2025 data that places Nigeria’s average life expectancy at 54.6 years. Today, we celebrate a figure of integrity—Professor Ayeleru—a man of principle, blessed with both intellectual prowess and a sound body. He has served as a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters and was previously the Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian French Language Village located in Badagry, Lagos State.
I first crossed paths with Professor Ayeleru while working as an investigative journalist amid the political dynamics of the 2015 governorship elections in Oyo State. Engaging with various political figures from differing parties, I found myself connecting with him as a rising star in the Bodija faction, led by Rashidi Ladoja.
Our shared experiences and academic backgrounds from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife forged a bond between us that quickly turned into a meaningful professional relationship. There are countless memorable instances, including one during Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s second-term campaign when a controversial article about Senator Ladoja sparked heated discussions. Professor Ayeleru and I collaborated on a substantial response to that article, which gained considerable traction within the media.
This exchange not only challenged Governor Ajimobi but resulted in a temporary halt to attacks on Ladoja from his supporters, illustrating the impactful nature of Professor Ayeleru’s work. His contributions to the intellect of Oyo State politics resonated beyond the local sphere, advocating for higher standards of discourse.
Beyond his public-written works, Ayeleru regularly invited fellow academics for serious discussions and strategy sessions, helping prepare Ladoja for debates and advocating robust intellectual engagement.
As we mark this significant anniversary, it is not merely about reflecting on years gone by; it is a celebration of values, mentorship, and the transformative impact he has made in the lives of countless students. He believes fervently that true knowledge devoid of humility leads to folly.
Profoundly respected by students and colleagues alike, Professor Ayeleru's humility and commitment to balance and fairness are trademarks of his character. He maintains that genuine success is gauged not by sheer publication volume but by the enlightenment and growth imparted upon those fortunate enough to learn from him.
Even at 60, his legacy as a Professor of French, Applied Linguistics, and African Literatures is a testament to a life guided by steadfast values and a dedication to shaping future scholars. Many of his former students, now leaders and academics, embody the high ideals he espoused, ensuring his influence continues well beyond the traditional classroom.
Professor Ayeleru remains a prime example of moral integrity, showcasing that effective leadership is rooted in service, wisdom, and clear ethical values.
My family joins a multitude of admirers in celebrating this remarkable achievement and hopes that Professor Ayeleru continues to lead a life rich in accomplishments and strength. Félicitations et joyeux anniversaire, mon chef.
