A significant bandit leader, Abdu Lankai, previously taken captive by a group associated with notorious figure Bello Turji, has been set free. Lankai played a pivotal role in establishing and implementing a peace accord within the Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State, and his return has reportedly alleviated concerns about escalating conflict in the region.

For six days, the community of Jibia experienced a period of heightened anxiety. Daily life was disrupted, with markets closing early, movement severely restricted, and residents living with the uncertainty of potential violence.

Residents recounted the tense atmosphere, with one individual, who preferred to remain anonymous, stating, "At that time, nobody slept with both eyes closed. We were afraid that if anything happened to Lankai, the whole peace process would collapse."

While previously involved in banditry, Lankai had more recently served as a crucial mediator between armed factions and the local populace. He was recognized for his efforts in upholding the Jibia peace agreement, resolving disputes, discouraging attacks, and encouraging fighters to disengage from violence.

The fragile peace was unsettled when Lankai was apprehended by rival armed factions linked to commanders Dogo Rabe and Black, who are reportedly connected to Bello Turji. Sources close to the situation indicated that the incident stemmed from a failed arms transaction.

According to these sources, an associate of Lankai allegedly received funds from opposing factions for the supply of weapons but failed to deliver, leading to a breakdown of trust and increased tensions.

A meeting convened to mediate the disagreement reportedly escalated into violence, resulting in the deaths of seven of Lankai’s followers and serious injuries to others.

Lankai’s subsequent abduction fueled fears that his demise could trigger a resurgence of widespread violence in Jibia.

His eventual release brought a palpable sense of relief to the community. Hundreds of residents gathered in the Malamawa area of Jibia to celebrate what they viewed as a return to normalcy, economic activity, and social harmony. Approximately 300 former bandits aligned with Lankai were also present, demonstrating their solidarity.

Addressing his supporters on Tuesday after his release, Lankai expressed gratitude for his safety and urged all parties to commit to peace.

"I thank God for sparing my life, and I thank everyone who came to show sympathy and solidarity. What I want now is peace. Whatever happened between me and my captors, I leave it to God," he stated.

Community leaders hailed his return as a significant development. Musa Masa’ud, a local leader, appealed to the government to bolster the ongoing peace efforts, while former combatants loyal to Lankai reaffirmed their dedication to the peace process.
