Cristiano Ronaldo, the renowned Portuguese footballer, has acquired a 25% ownership stake in the Spanish team UD Almería. This investment represents his latest venture into football ownership as he broadens his business interests beyond his playing career.
The announcement was made in an official communiqué from the club, which revealed that Ronaldo has joined an ownership consortium led by the SMC Group.
The statement noted, "Cristiano Ronaldo invests in UD Almería as part of the club’s ownership consortium led by SMC Group. He acquires 25% of the shares through CR7 Sports subsidiary."
Additionally, the club clarified that Ronaldo obtained this stake via CR7 Sports Investments, a subdivision of CR7 S.A., indicating that this investment is a crucial milestone in the club's plans for development.
The comments further elaborated, "Cristiano Ronaldo has acquired a 25% share of UD Almería through CR7 Sports Investments, a subsidiary of CR7 S.A. This marks an important phase in both the club’s growth and in the investment portfolio of the Portuguese businessman."
Mohamed Al Kheireiji, the president of UD Almería, expressed enthusiasm for this investment, highlighting Ronaldo’s extensive football experience and understanding of the Spanish football landscape.
"We are excited that Cristiano has chosen our club to invest in. He is widely regarded as the greatest player in history, is well-versed in Spanish football, and recognizes the potential we are nurturing here for both the first team and the academy," stated Al Kheireiji.
Ronaldo emphasized his long-standing aspirations in football governance and player development, sharing, "For a long time, I have aimed to contribute to football beyond the pitch. UD Almería has a strong foundation with significant potential for growth. I look forward to collaborating with the board to aid in the club’s upcoming phase."
This acquisition forms part of the SMC Group’s extensive global expansion strategy under Al Kheireiji's leadership, coinciding with Almería's ongoing efforts to bolster their competitive standing in Spain’s second division.
Ronaldo's transition into club ownership follows a growing trend of elite athletes investing in football clubs, positioning the five-time Ballon d'Or recipient for a significant role after his playing days conclude.
