The Department of State Services (DSS) has successfully detained a suspected gunrunner while intercepting 850 rounds of live ammunition in Cross River State, according to an official announcement regarding efforts to combat illegal arms trafficking.
On March 16, DSS operatives conducted the arrest at the Ivara Esu Estate located in Odukpani Local Government Area, apprehending Kelvin Ebikeniye Dugo following intelligence-led operations.
Security officials revealed that the operation was initiated based on credible information which indicated Dugo's intention to acquire a substantial quantity of ammunition from another suspected gunrunner, Azenda Barnabas, also known as Jagaban, who is based in Aliade, Benue State.
Sources noted that Dugo was intercepted just after receiving the shipment, which had been concealed among food items. The recovered items included 850 rounds of ammunition and two empty AK-47 magazines.
This arrest is part of a broader effort by the DSS to target arms trafficking networks operating within the country.
“The DSS has ramped up its efforts to hunt down such individuals, executing sustained operations in nearly every state of the Federation,” stated a source.
The latest operation emphasizes the agency’s ongoing dedication to combating the proliferation of illegal weapons.
“This successful mission is part of numerous ongoing efforts throughout the nation that illustrate the DSS's serious commitment to dismantling gunrunning networks and curtailing illegal arms proliferation.”
