A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory has convicted Robert Orya, the former managing director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), sentencing him to a staggering 490 years in prison for his role in a N2.4 billion fraudulent activity.
On Thursday, Justice F.E. Messiri pronounced a sentence of 10 years for each of the ten counts after establishing Orya's guilt regarding the charges brought against him.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) initiated the case, represented by its counsel, Samuel Ugwuegbulem.
Orya was at the helm of NEXIM Bank from 2009 until 2016 and was recognized for his initiatives aimed at revitalizing the bank's focus on non-oil export support and improving its financial condition following previous challenges.
The EFCC presented a total of 49 charges, accusing Orya of unlawfully diverting approximately N2.4 billion in funds.
