Former Super Eagles captain and coach, Sunday Oliseh, has shared his disappointment regarding Michael Olise's choice to play for the French national team.
Speaking on his podcast, Global Football Insights, ahead of Bayern Munich's Champions League match, Oliseh praised the winger's significant technical skills. However, he admitted it is frustrating to see the player in a French jersey.
The 22-year-old Bayern Munich player was eligible to play for Nigeria, Algeria, England, or France. Despite efforts by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to secure his commitment, Olise ultimately opted to represent France.
“When I see Olise play, he gets me so angry,” Oliseh stated on his podcast. “I’m just saying this guy should not be wearing the French national team jersey; he should be wearing the green-white-green of Nigeria.”
Oliseh also took the opportunity to address a common misunderstanding among football fans who assume a family connection between himself and the player due to their shared surname.
“This is why our people are funny. Some even sent messages asking why I sabotaged us—your son went to play for France,” Oliseh remarked.
He clarified, “He’s not my son, and his own Olise does not even have an ‘h’ at the end of it.”
Despite the absence of any familial relationship, Oliseh emphasized that losing a player of Michael Olise's caliber represents a considerable setback for the Super Eagles' future prospects.
