A notable political development is unfolding in Zamfara State with the decision of former senator Kabiru Garba Marafa and his followers to embrace the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their political vehicle for the 2027 general elections.
This strategic shift, which could reshape the political landscape of the state, was finalized during a private caucus meeting held by the Marafa political movement in Kaduna State.
Key figures within the group engaged in extensive deliberations regarding the future direction of their movement during the session.
According to a statement released by the group’s secretary, Aminu A. Jelani, the resolution to join the ADC was a consequence of thorough consultations and a comprehensive assessment of the current political climate.
"The caucus has unanimously agreed to formally adopt the ADC as the political platform for the Marafa political movement," the statement declared.
It further indicated that this decision was officially endorsed through a voting process by the attendees at the meeting.
Jelani announced that all members of the movement across Zamfara's fourteen local government areas, and beyond, have been instructed to promptly begin their registration with the ADC while simultaneously intensifying efforts to mobilize support at the grassroots level.
"Therefore, all members, supporters, coordinators, and stakeholders are hereby directed to immediately initiate their registration with the ADC and bolster grassroots mobilization activities in all wards, local governments, and senatorial districts," he urged.
The statement also highlighted that this decision came about following a formal invitation extended to Marafa and his supporters by the leadership of the ADC. It was noted that the former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Dikko Abubakar, played a part in facilitating discussions between both parties.
The movement pledged to collaborate with the ADC "in good faith, with sincerity, and with openness," while simultaneously appealing to the party's leadership to foster an environment of inclusivity and cooperation.
"The Marafa Support Groups remain steadfast in their dedication to advancing good governance, justice, accountability, and leadership that is centered on the people," the statement concluded.
The caucus also extended its appreciation to its members for their unwavering loyalty and perseverance, acknowledging that the movement was entering "a new chapter of strategic political engagement."
This latest political manoeuvre occurs amidst early strategic moves by political actors nationwide, as attention begins to turn towards the 2027 electoral contest.
