Thomas Frank believes that Tottenham Hotspur is on the path to improvement, although the steps taken are minor, and he has welcomed the acquisition of the 'fantastic' Conor Gallagher during the January transfer period.
Following Spurs' 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Cup over the weekend, which marked their seventh loss in 13 matches across all competitions, Frank faced more criticism from discontented supporters.
However, the Tottenham management seems to remain supportive of Frank. They recently finalized the transfer of England international Gallagher, who joined for a reported figure of £34.7 million ($45.5 million).
A recent announcement confirmed that Frank appointed John Heitinga as his new assistant first-team coach, taking over from Matt Wells, who left to lead Colorado Rapids.
Despite Tottenham's challenging position in 14th place in the Premier League as they prepare to encounter struggling London rivals West Ham, Frank expressed optimism regarding the 'good signs' emerging and insisted that 'everything is progressing'.
"I’m very aware of how this football world operates, without a doubt," Frank stated. "I understand that we haven't achieved the results we desire.
“I can see the gradual improvements we are making. In the last six matches, our performances have been more positive and consistent. They're not perfect, but there are promising signs."
The Danish coach further noted, "The second halves against Bournemouth (in a 3-2 loss) and Villa could have been moments where we falter completely. Instead, we came together and increased our performance; this is indicative of a culture that is strengthening, pushing us to totally commit to changing our current momentum.
"In football, momentum can shift quickly. I can observe small signs of progress within our culture, our training, and the dedication shown by the players here.
"We are putting considerable effort into enhancing our offensive game since our defense is seen as relatively solid. There's room for improvement, especially in set pieces, but we are focusing on our attacking capabilities.
"The incremental advancements we are making—from signing Conor to bringing on board John Heitinga as an assistant coach—are encouraging. Everything is heading in the right direction. Now, we simply require a top-notch performance and a win on Saturday."
Frank is hopeful that Gallagher can inject some much-needed energy into the squad, particularly as Rodrigo Bentancur recovers from hamstring surgery and Richarlison is not expected to return until March due to a similar injury.
Gallagher may have faced challenges in securing a starting position at Atletico Madrid, yet he managed to net seven goals and provide nine assists in his final season with Chelsea.
"Considering how he concluded his last year at Chelsea, he was, at times, virtually unstoppable, proving to be an exceptional player for them that season. That’s the quality of Conor Gallagher we aim to leverage," Frank remarked.
"I believe he is someone who can seamlessly integrate into our team and make an immediate impact."
