Reports indicate that more than 4,500 individuals have died in Iran since protests commenced late December.
Activists provided this information on Wednesday, with new data from the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) based in the US.
The organization confirmed that it has authenticated 4,519 fatalities, while over 9,000 other cases are reportedly still under review.
Among those deceased, HRANA documented 4,251 protesters and 197 members of security forces.
The internet blackout in Iran remains in effect, leading to only limited visuals gradually surfacing, which hint at the extensive violent response to the large-scale demonstrations that occurred on January 8 and 9.
Activists referenced troubling footage reviewed by medical experts, who noted that some fallen demonstrators had previously been treated medically.
The discovery of medical apparatus, including catheters and oxygen tubes, on cadavers located outside of healthcare establishments raises concerns that injured individuals might have succumbed after receiving initial medical care.
The report claims that these fatalities may have taken place after the injured were taken from hospitals without any formal declaration of death.
Iranian authorities have accused what they label as “terrorist factions” as well as their principal adversaries, the United States and Israel, for the turmoil seen during the protests.
Nevertheless, these allegations cannot be independently validated, primarily due to the ongoing communication restrictions.
