A man has confessed to manslaughter after the death of his carer, Irene Mbugua, in Birmingham.
Irene, aged 46, was sadly discovered deceased at the home of David Walsh, located on Markby Road in Winson Green, on June 23, 2025.
Preliminary investigations revealed that she had sustained severe injuries to her face and head, indicating that she had been assaulted.
Authorities initiated a thorough inquiry, confirming that Irene was employed as a carer and was at Walsh's residence to provide assistance.
Walsh, 35, was arrested shortly thereafter and was admitted to a hospital.
Subsequently, he faced charges of murder along with allegations of assaulting multiple police officers during his arrest.
While claiming innocence of murder, Walsh went to trial this week at the Warwick Crown Court (Coventry), where he changed his plea to guilty for the lesser offense of manslaughter on Tuesday, February 24.
Additionally, he accepted four counts of assaulting emergency service workers and is awaiting sentencing next month.
Detective Inspector Michelle Cordell, who headed the investigation, remarked, “Our thoughts have consistently been with Irene’s family and loved ones during this extraordinarily challenging time for them.
“The nature of this case is truly heartbreaking. Irene's life was abruptly taken by someone she was caring for. My team has dedicated extensive effort to understanding the events that led to Irene’s death, aiming to deliver clarity to her family.”
Irene’s family has received continuous updates throughout the inquiry and has been supported by specialized officers.
In remembrance of her, the family released a heartfelt tribute after her passing.
The tribute states: “It’s profoundly saddening that you were taken from us in such a cruel manner. We feel lost without you, and we pray for the strength to face each day, Mom. We will dearly miss your radiant smile and joyful laughter.
“Please guide us on how to navigate this, as we still lack a sense of direction. Rest peacefully; you will always remain in our hearts.”
