Manchester United's pursuit of a top-four position in the league suffered a considerable setback with an unexpected 2-1 home defeat against Leeds United.
The fierce rivals clashed at Old Trafford on Monday evening, and the home team's uninspired performance in the first half was capitalised upon by Leeds' Noah Okafor, who scored twice to secure a vital three points for Leeds and improve their position away from the relegation zone.
Okafor capitalized on a defensive misstep by Manchester United's Lenny Yoro to give the visitors the lead. The Swiss forward, who has Nigerian heritage, extended the advantage in the 29th minute with a shot that took a deflection.
The Red Devils defender Lisandro Martinez was shown a red card in the 56th minute for violent conduct, specifically for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin's hair. Despite this setback, the team managed to pull a goal back through Casemiro's powerful header.
However, Michael Carrick's squad was unable to avert the defeat, marking their first home loss under his management. This surprising defeat at home to Leeds is also their first in the league since 1981. The result leaves the former Premier League champions clinging to third place on goal difference, with six games remaining to secure a spot in the Champions League next season.
Meanwhile, Leeds United now sit in 15th place with 36 points from 32 matches, establishing a six-point cushion above the relegation places and enhancing their prospects of avoiding the drop.
