The Nigerian community residing in South Africa is mourning the loss of one of their own, Emeka Uzor, who was fatally shot recently.
In an announcement released to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA), which represents Nigerians in South Africa, expressed its sorrow over the incident.
According to the statement from NUSA, Uzor was tragically shot around 3 p.m. at a Carltex Garage located in Windsor East, Randburg, Johannesburg.
It was reported that he was in his vehicle at the time of the attack, which is suspected to be an assassination. The union has highlighted that this incident reflects a continuing trend of violent attacks aimed at Nigerians in South Africa.
Smart Nwobi, NUSA’s President, along with the National Publicity Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, issued the joint statement.
They urged the South African government, especially the Minister of Police and the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, to conduct a thorough and equitable investigation into Uzor's death. The union emphasized that justice must be served against anyone found responsible for this crime.
Furthermore, NUSA has called for an end to the persistent violence directed at Nigerian citizens living in South Africa. They also urged the Nigerian government, through the offices of the Consul General and the High Commissioner, to diplomatically engage with their South African counterparts.
NUSA is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure the perpetrator(s) are brought to justice for this horrific act. They expressed confidence in the South African justice system, hoping for accountability and closure for Uzor's family.
They encouraged the Nigerian community in South Africa to maintain peace and abide by the law during this challenging time. NUSA reassured them that efforts are ongoing to achieve justice in Uzor's case.
