U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered an extensive U.S. naval armada to make its way toward Iran, while indicating that it may not be employed, as the friction between Iran and the United States intensifies.
"We have numerous ships heading that way just in case. A significant flotilla is on its way in that direction. We will observe how the situation unfolds," Trump remarked to journalists aboard Air Force One, returning from Davos after participating in the World Economic Forum.
"An armada is in transit. We possess a considerable fleet advancing toward that area, and perhaps we won’t have to use it. Time will tell," Trump added.
Earlier, Mohammad Pakpour, the commander-in-chief of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, cautioned both the U.S. and Israel to exercise caution to prevent a "more painful and regrettable fate."
Pakpour emphasized that Iranian forces were "ready to carry out orders from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei" and were "more prepared than ever" with their "fingers on the trigger."
Concerns regarding potential U.S. aggression towards Iran heightened during protests in Iran that occurred from December to January when Trump threatened to intervene if Iranian authorities were to suppress demonstrators with violence.
Trump has consistently urged Iranians to take control of institutions "if feasible," asserting that the U.S. was "locked and loaded" to shield the protesters.
The Iranian leadership has accused the U.S. and Israel of inciting violence and causing casualties amid the widespread protests. Earlier this week, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated that U.S. threats against Iran "motivated plotters" to adopt a strategy that he labeled as one of "maximum bloodshed."
In a televised comment last Saturday, Khamenei referred to the U.S. president as a criminal for the losses, damages, and slander inflicted upon the Iranian populace.
According to a report from Iranian state television, IRIB, released on Wednesday, 3,117 individuals lost their lives during the turmoil, with 2,427 of the deceased categorized as "innocent civilians and security personnel."
