Russian President Vladimir Putin has initiated contact with Iran’s leader, Masoud Pezeshkian, proposing Moscow's support to alleviate tensions in the Middle East, particularly after diplomatic negotiations between Tehran and Washington concluded without progress.

The Kremlin announced that the call occurred on Sunday, during which Putin reaffirmed Russia's readiness to act as a mediator in the ongoing crisis.

"Vladimir Putin emphasized his readiness to further facilitate the search for a political and diplomatic settlement to the conflict, and to mediate efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the Middle East," the Kremlin stated in its summary of the discussion, as relayed by AFP.

This diplomatic engagement followed the unexpected termination of talks between Iran and the United States in Islamabad, Pakistan. The entire American delegation reportedly withdrew after failing to achieve any advancements.

A representative from the US confirmed that no team members remained in Islamabad to pursue back-channel discussions, indicating a complete halt to the negotiations.

The US delegation was understood to include lead negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who departed after extensive sessions yielded no breakthrough on the issues concerning Iran.

While speaking during a stopover at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, an official accompanying Vice President JD Vance confirmed the departure of all negotiators. This occurred despite prior suggestions that some might remain to continue the discussions.

Concurrently, Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, voiced criticism regarding Washington's approach, stating it did not foster confidence during the negotiation process.

"My colleagues in the Iranian delegation put forward constructive initiatives, but the other side was unable to gain the trust of the Iranian delegation," Ghalibaf posted on X.
