Diego Simeone has praised Ademola Lookman for his growing impact on the team following a stellar performance during the dramatic Madrid derby on Sunday, despite Atlético Madrid suffering a 3-2 defeat against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.

The Nigerian forward made his mark by scoring the opening goal in the 33rd minute, finding the back of the net from close range after a meticulously executed team play that provided Atlético with an early lead.

By achieving this goal, Lookman became the first Nigerian to score in the Madrid derby and only the eighth Atlético player in the 21st century to find the net on his La Liga derby debut.

In reflecting on Lookman's performance, Simeone highlighted the player's development and significant contribution to the squad.

“He's been on an upward trajectory, working diligently and providing us with various attacking options, which is precisely what we need from him. We also require his contributions to our defensive efforts, as he possesses the necessary attributes. With a big heart and a desire to learn and improve, he is exceptional, and we hope he continues to deliver crucial moments for us, just as he did today,” commented the Atlético manager.

Lookman's goal was the culmination of a smooth attacking sequence featuring Johnny Cardoso and Matteo Ruggeri, with a smart backheel from Giuliano Simeone positioning him perfectly for a composed finish. This goal also marked his second in 12 league appearances during his first season in La Liga.

Despite Atlético's strong start, Real Madrid responded with vigor after halftime, with Vinícius Júnior converting a penalty in the 52nd minute before Federico Valverde put the hosts ahead just moments later.

Atlético equalized in the 66th minute thanks to a magnificent effort from Nahuel Molina, but Vinícius Júnior netted again in the 72nd minute to restore Real Madrid's advantage.

The match took another turn when Valverde received a red card following a VAR review, leaving Madrid down to ten players, but the home team held on to secure the full three points.

With this victory, Real Madrid climbed to 69 points, closing the gap on league leaders Barcelona to four points, while Atlético Madrid remains in fourth position with 57 points.

As for Lookman, this match marked another important milestone in his career, as he now prepares to focus on his international duties, with two upcoming matches for the Super Eagles.
