The African Union (AU) Commission has registered serious concern over the reported military operations conducted by the United States in collaboration with Israel targeting locations within Iran. This development is viewed as a dangerous escalation within the Middle Eastern conflict.
In a statement released on Saturday, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed his deep apprehension regarding these military actions, describing them as a serious intensification of hostilities in the region.
He urged all involved parties to practice restraint, calling for immediate de- escalation and continued dialogue. Youssouf pointed out the necessity for compliance with international law and the United Nations Charter to maintain global peace and security.
The AU Commission further warned that ongoing conflict could lead to severe repercussions globally, particularly in vulnerable areas.
Youssouf stated, "Continued escalation threatens to exacerbate global instability, presenting significant challenges for energy markets, food security, and economic resilience—especially in Africa, where conflicts and economic strains are already evident."
He advocated for all parties to prioritize diplomatic solutions and support current mediation efforts. Youssouf highlighted the importance of diplomatic engagement and existing international mediation facilitated by intermediaries, such as the Sultanate of Oman, to prevent further deterioration and uphold the established international order.
Reaffirming the AU's stance, he remarked, "Sustainable peace can only be pursued through diplomacy, not through military force."
