An advisory commission selected by President Donald Trump has sanctioned the design of a commemorative gold coin showcasing his image, as announced on Thursday, March 19.
This coin is intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding.
One side of the coin features a bold depiction of Trump with his fists placed on a desk, while the reverse side displays an eagle with its wings unfurled, seemingly resting on a bell.
Although the coin will not hold any official monetary value, its retail price remains undisclosed; similar commemorative coins from the US Mint typically sell for more than $1,000.
"We are excited to produce coins that embody the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, and there is no more representative figure for the front of such coins than our sitting president," stated US Treasurer Brandon Beach.
Beach highlighted that the design of this coin will be distinct from the images of Trump that are slated for two other coins: a one-dollar coin for circulation and a one-ounce gold piece.
Last October, Trump terminated all six members of the US Commission of Fine Arts, appointing his chosen individuals to lead a series of renovation projects upon his return to power in January.
Among the most contentious projects are a ballroom he is constructing at the White House and renovations at the renowned Kennedy Center for the arts, which he has rebranded with his name.
Furthermore, a separate advisory group, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, had previously declined to consider Trump's coin during a discussion in February.
According to committee member Donald Scarinci, since the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, no country has minted coins displaying the likeness of a democratically elected leader while they remain in office.
"Only nations ruled by monarchs or dictators showcase their current leaders' images on the currency of their realm," he added.
