A dancer performing at a zoo in China was caught in a harrowing incident when her costume caught fire during a live show. Video footage shows the performer running towards a river to douse the flames engulfing her.
The dancer was engaged in a fire dance, a traditional Chinese folk performance, at the Nantong Forest Safari Park near Shanghai last Wednesday, April 1, when the unfortunate event occurred. She was meant to perform between two flaming hoops, but the fire quickly spread to her attire.
Mere moments into her routine, the dancer, visibly distressed, rushed towards a nearby body of water in an apparent effort to escape being severely burned. She reached the river approximately 11 seconds after the fire began to consume her dress.
Zoo officials stated that the dancer did not sustain serious injuries. The park is known to house nearly 20,000 animals across more than 300 different species.
A video documenting the incident was shared on social media, showing the dancer’s plight as she sought immediate refuge in the water.
