Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has been in power for 16 years, has conceded defeat in the Hungarian general election, as preliminary results indicate a substantial victory for the opposition. Péter Magyar's Tisza party is on track to secure a commanding majority in parliament, signaling a significant shift in the country's political landscape.

Magyar announced Orbán's concession on social media, stating, "Prime Minister Viktor Orban just called to congratulate us on our victory." With over half of the precincts counted, Magyar's party was reported to have garnered 52.49 percent of the vote, while Orbán's Fidesz party trailed at 38.83 percent. The election saw record voter turnout, underscoring its perceived importance for Hungary and the broader European continent.

Orbán's loss is expected to be a notable setback for his international allies, including Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. In contrast, Magyar, a former supporter of Orbán who later became a vocal critic, has pledged to foster closer relations with the European Union and to implement a strong anti- corruption platform.

European Union leadership welcomed the outcome. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her satisfaction on the platform X, stating, "Europe’s heart is beating stronger in Hungary tonight." She added, "Hungary has chosen Europe. Europe has always chosen Hungary. A country reclaims its European path. The Union grows stronger."

French President Emmanuel Macron also extended his congratulations to Magyar, posting on X, "I’ve just spoken with Peter Magyar to congratulate him on his victory in Hungary!" Macron further commented, "France hails a victory for democratic turnout, the Hungarian people’s attachment to European Union values, and for Hungary in Europe. Together, we will make Europe more sovereign, for the security of our continent, our competitiveness and our democracy."

Orbán, known for his nationalist stance and as a self-proclaimed "thorn" in the side of the EU, frequently clashed with other member states over various issues, including foreign policy and the rule of law within Hungary.
