A joint special forces base located in Erbil was recently attacked by a swarm of drones, resulting in injuries to American soldiers and fueling concerns about potential indirect support from Vladimir Putin to Iran regarding military tactics in the intensifying conflict in the Middle East.

The drone strike occurred on Wednesday night, targeting a facility utilized by coalition special forces operating in the area. British military officials reported that while two drones were successfully intercepted, several others breached the base's defenses. Guy Foden, a commander at the UK Permanent Joint Headquarters, confirmed that British personnel present in Erbil were assisting in the defense efforts during the attack.

Casualties from the assault included American troops, though British forces reportedly sustained no injuries. Nick Perry, who supervises global operations for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence, relayed that the injuries sustained by American service members were not life-threatening.

This incident took place near facilities housing the United States Consulate in Erbil and in the vicinity of Erbil International Airport, where coalition forces maintain military facilities. During a briefing in London, UK Defence Secretary John Healey indicated that some of Iran’s tactics might reflect Russian influence, particularly in terms of drone warfare strategies.

After receiving an operational update at the Northwood headquarters, Healey announced that analysts are currently assessing components from the drones involved in the strikes to determine if there is a connection to Russian technology or materials.

He also pointed out that the conflict-induced rise in oil prices might financially benefit Moscow, possibly providing more resources for Russia's ongoing campaign in Ukraine.

As a response to the rising threats, British military actions across the Middle East have intensified. Royal Air Force aircraft, including Eurofighter Typhoon and F-35B Lightning II jets, have been conducting defensive patrols over Jordan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates to safeguard allied forces and regional associates. Reports indicate that British pilots have accumulated over 300 operational hours intercepting and neutralizing multiple drones that posed threats to coalition bases in the area.

At the same time, tensions have been heightened following the demise of Iran’s prior supreme leader, resulting from coordinated strikes by the US and Israel.

His successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has vowed to retaliate, asserting in a televised address that Iran would seek vengeance for those lost during the attacks. He cautioned that Iranian forces would persist in targeting foreign military bases throughout the region, claiming these installations serve to extend American power and influence in the Middle East.

Concerns regarding security in the Strait of Hormuz have also surged, as it remains one of the world's most vital energy conduit, with approximately one- fifth of global oil supplies transiting through it daily.
