The Federal Executive Council of Nigeria has approved the launch of a new GIS- enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system, designed to modernize the country's national addressing framework.

This decision was revealed by Bosun Tijani following a council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

The endorsement marks an important progression in rolling out this initiative, which was initially proposed four years ago. In 2022, the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) allied with the National Population Commission to facilitate the implementation of a digitized postcode system throughout Nigeria.

In a post shared on platform X, Tijani mentioned that this project forms a crucial part of the Ministry’s overarching strategy to enhance Nigeria's digital infrastructure alongside improving its national addressing systems. He stated, “We will establish a modern, geospatially intelligent addressing system that enhances precision nationwide and allows for quicker and more dependable mail and parcel processing.”

Tijani further explained that the system will be developed in partnership with NIPOST, currently headed by Tola Odeyemi. He emphasized that the initiative aims not only to refine postal services but also to bolster broader national development objectives.

“The Digital Postcode System will not only strengthen postal operations but will also work as a key national facilitator that supports enhanced national planning, better emergency response, increased logistics efficiency, improved e-commerce, and delivery of government services,” Tijani elaborated.

He pointed out that as Nigeria's digital economy expands, foundational systems like a modern addressing scheme are crucial for enhancing connectivity between citizens, businesses, and governmental entities.

The minister concluded by stating that the council's approval underscores the federal government's dedication to fostering an environment conducive to a modern, inclusive, and globally competitive digital economy.
