Leon Goretzka, who plays as a midfielder for Bayern Munich, is preparing to exit the club when his contract ends at the season's close, having opted against a mid-season transfer.
The 30-year-old German player has been with Bayern since 2018 and was instrumental in securing the Champions League title in 2020. This season, he aims for a seventh Bundesliga championship with the team.
Christoph Freund, the sporting director of Bayern, confirmed, “His journey at Bayern will be over in the summer,” prior to the club's Bundesliga match against Hamburger SV scheduled for Saturday.
Freund mentioned that discussions had taken place regarding serious interest from other clubs, but Goretzka expressed his desire to fulfill the remaining months of his contract due to the team's impressive performance this season.
“I am truly honored by the attention from top clubs worldwide, but just as decisively, I want to stay with FC Bayern until the season concludes,” Goretzka shared on Instagram. He expressed his wish to celebrate his eight- year tenure at the club with a memorable trophy presentation alongside fans in Munich’s main square.
Goretzka noted that he believes it is “the right time for me to embark on a new chapter both professionally and personally,” although he did not specify any potential clubs for his future endeavors.
This season, Goretzka has appeared in 28 matches for Bayern across all competitions, starting in 16 of them, as coach Vincent Kompany often chooses Aleksandar Pavlovic to partner with Joshua Kimmich in midfield.
Additionally, Goretzka has accumulated 67 caps for the German national team, participating in all matches during their qualification for the upcoming World Cup set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
