Local Hunters and Vigilantes Free Three Students Kidnapped in Kogi

Three students from Abubakar Audi University have been rescued from kidnappers in a Kogi forest, thanks to the efforts of local hunters and the Kogi State Vigilante Service. Security operations continue to locate the remaining victims.

The Kogi State Vigilante Service successfully rescued three students who had been abducted from the Abubakar Audi University (AAU) in a forest located within the Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State.

According to Idris Suleiman Idris, the spokesperson for the agency, the students were taken on January 16, 2026, while they were on their way back to school following the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The statement indicated that the rescue operation was conducted in collaboration with local hunters and other security forces.

Idris mentioned that the security teams are continuing their search in the bush with the aim of freeing the remaining three abducted students and capturing the kidnappers.

“On January 17, 2026, during the early hours within a forest along the Okura/Ankpa route in the Ankpa Local Government Area, a joint operation involving personnel from the Police, KSVS, and local hunters succeeded in rescuing three victims, identified as Umar Babangi (19), Ahmed Abubakar (20), and Zakaria Yakubu (20), from suspected Fulani kidnappers,” the statement reported.

The recovered students had been kidnapped alongside three of their peers a day prior (January 16, 2026) while traveling back to university.

The freed students are currently receiving medical examinations at a facility before being reunited with their families. Meanwhile, the security personnel are focused on rescuing the remaining abducted individuals and apprehending those responsible for the kidnapping.

Alh. Ibrahim Omeiza Sani (fsi+), the Controller-General of the Kogi State Vigilante Service, commended the bravery demonstrated by his team and the other security forces involved in the rescue mission.

He also expressed appreciation to the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo, for his continual support and dedication to combating crime in the region.

Sani Ibrahim further urged the public to provide timely intelligence to security agencies, stressing that “Security is the responsibility of everyone.”
